Character Information
Name: Kiriya Kujo
Series: Kamen Rider Ex-Aid
Appearance: Image!
Age: 26
Canon Point: Post-death in Episode 12 and immediately following his subsequent appearance in Kamen Sentai GoRider, where he appeared as a member of the team of dead Riders.
Canon History: The wiki's here!. Please note that the Gorider special is listed at the bottom and not chronologically.
Personality: Kiriya is well aware of the power of appearances. The way he dresses is very relaxed--you don't often expect to find a coroner wearing leather jackets (incorrectly and just draped over his shoulders, at that), round sunglasses and Hawaiian print shirts, but there he is. His mannerisms are generally open and easygoing, and he comes off as lazy and cheerful rather than as anyone you'd have to worry about performing corporate espionage. When things get serious, the lazy facade vanishes. He puts his jacket on like a normal person (using the sleeves and everything!) and steps forward to do what needs to be done. Waiting around for others to act is not Kiriya's style. That his Rider transformation initially limits him to being a motorcycle that needs a rider in order to function at its best is especially galling, because he'd much rather not have to rely on anyone else.
That said, he really is a cheerful guy. That's no front. When all of the Kamen Riders (save for Genm) are in a four-way team-up using the Drago Knight Hunter Z Gashat and sharing its power between them, he's easily the most excited about it. He even gets more into it than Emu, and Emu's the one who had the idea in the first place--Emu tricks everyone else to get them to the same spot at the same time. (Kiriya can respect that, most definitely. He approves of such subterfuge. That gets things done.) All of the Riders have fought one another at one point or another, and it's clear that Brave and Snipe won't let things go so easily, but Kiriya's just out to have a good time. Sure, some of it is excitement that he has arms and legs in this transformation, but he's too excited for it to be just that. He may feel he's ultimately the only one he can rely upon, but that doesn't mean he's some loner who detests working with others. He likes working with others if given the chance, even if he's got a hard time trusting people or opening up to them. He's a coroner who hangs around dead people all day, and he doesn't often get to work that closely with the living.
He's charming, and he's willing to say whatever he needs to say in order to get what he needs to do done. He's an excellent liar, and he lies so often that it's hard for most people to tell what's a truth and what's a lie. He's good at reading people, and this only helps him out in telling them what they want to hear. Kiriya may not always be happy with that, but he's not going to dwell on it. What good would that do? If people see him as a liar, he won't argue the point.
Kiriya's relationship with the idea of truth has always been a complicated one. Lying, to Kiriya, serves one primary purpose: protection. As he sees it, the truth is a dangerous thing, and it must be handled carefully. Leaving bits of it out or altering them entirely is perfectly acceptable, as it both shields you from the truth's harmful effects and gets things done. He blames the truth--"you have the game disease"--for killing his friend Jungo. After all, if he hadn't told Jungo the truth, Jungo wouldn't have panicked over the diagnosis and flung himself into traffic. Kiriya can't see that death as anything other than his fault. Because he told the truth, someone--not just anyone, a friend--died. Even so, he has a certain sort of respect for the truth, and just because he thinks it's dangerous doesn't mean he wants to ignore it completely. It's his pursuit of the truth, of what's really going on with Emu, that ultimately leads to Kiriya's demise. Kiriya becomes so focused on finding the truth that he ends up directly provoking Genm, and he's killed in an attempt to keep him from using this information to stop Genm's plans. He's aware of the risks, and he takes them anyway. It's atonement--atonement for Jungo's death, as well as atonement for all the lies he's told.
He tries to tell the truth and to strive for the truth when it's important; his association with Emu has taught him the value of that. It's because of Emu that he tries so hard to find the truth and to prove that he's not just a liar trying to scam Gashats off of people. It's not like these attempts at embracing the truth are a smooth process, either. There's one point at which a situation is reframed by Genm to make it look as though Kiriya's been playing everyone else for fools, and though that's not what Kiriya's been trying to do, he can't disprove anything. Rather than insist that no, he's telling the truth this time, honest, he grins and bears it. Yeah, sure, he was caught lying again, how foolish could anyone be to trust him? Might as well roll with it. It's the sort of thing that hurts his credibility, but he sees no other way to get out of that situation. He moves very quickly with bad situations, and he'd rather pretend that whatever terrible outcome he's come across was all part of his plan. Appearances are important, after all. Better to be seen as a terribly competent liar than a pitiable fool who can't effectively wield the truth or take care of himself. He would rather be seen as the player than the one who was getting played, no matter how much it hurts.
Thanks to the events of Kamen Sentai Go-Rider, he's quite aware he died and should be dead--and he's made his peace with that. He's not thrilled about the scenario, but given the fact that he effectively died again to prevent his killer from reviving and wreaking more havoc...he'll take it.
Abilities: Kiriya is a doctor--more specifically, he's a coroner, a medical examiner. He's qualified to practice on actual living patients, but as of late, he's been dealing with corpses. He can patch you up, and he can also identify where the patch job failed horribly. He's also been researching the game disease, trying to figure out where it came from and how it spreads. Because the game disease has literally been engineered from video games, there's also a certain amount of computer skill that goes into some of this research too--both in a medical sense and in an "I'm gonna hack your files lol corporate espionage" sense.
Since I'm pulling him post-death, Kiriya's primary powerset is the ability to transform into Kamen Rider Lazer using a Gamer Driver and video game cartridge-like devices called Gashats. The Gashat used affects the nature of the transformation. Kiriya had to undergo a surgical procedure in order to use the Gamer Driver, and not just anyone can use it--trying to use the Driver without having had the necessary procedure is a good way to end up injured or dead.
Kiriya makes use of the Bakusou Bike Gashat to transform into Lazer Level 1 and 2. The Level 1 transformation is a chibi-style humanoid and is not terribly powerful. Level 2 allows him to transform into a motorcycle. Unlike the other Riders, Kiriya needs a partner in order to make the most of this form's power--he literally needs someone to ride him and help him activate his finishing attacks. He uses the Girigiri Chanbara Gashat to attain Level 3, which is once more a humanoid armored form that allows him to fight and use all his attacks on his own. His personal weapon is the Gashacon Sparrow, a longbow that separates into two handheld scythes. This is only accessible when he transforms into a form that has hands he can use to use the weapon. The weapon just sort of appears when it's needed.
He also has the ability to somehow conceal the Gamer Driver and Gashats on his person until the narrative calls for it, as everything is quite large andtoyetic bulky.
After the events of Kamen Sentai GoRider, he's also in possession of the card that allows transformation into KiRanger, which is basically the yellow member of a Kamen Rider themed Sentai team. KiRanger's powers and abilities boil down to jumping higher and hitting harder and faster than a normal human would be able to. Because of the Rider theme, a flying kick in form will be particularly damaging. Because he's alone, he's got zero access to any sort of team-based finishers the GoRiders would otherwise possess (i.e. "hey, everyone pass this ball around and charge it with your energy and then someone soccer kicks it at the monster so it explodes"). This form comes with no specialized weapons or mecha summons or anything else that's generally expected of Super Sentai.
Inventory:
Aside from his clothing and a pair of sunglasses, he's got the following:
- Gamer Driver: Required for any sort of transformation into a Kamen Rider.
- Bakusou Bike Gashat: Used with Gamer Driver, required for transformation into Lazer Lv. 1 and 2
- Girigiri Chanbara Gashat: Required for transformation into Lazer Lv. 3
- KiRanger Card: Allows for transformation into KiRanger, does not require any additional equipment.
